Linux (OS / Platform)

Linux is growing to be the platform of choice for the future, although there are a number of very powerful tools for developing apps for Linux. It has always been daunting for Windows GUI developers to develop Linux Apps. For example a Windows VB ( Visual Basic ) programmer will have a very tough time developing apps for Linux.

GoDB Changes all that. Now developers can develop Linux apps in familiar Windows . That's right!!! they can use the GoDB IDE in Windows develop the applications debug, simulate and test them in windows and finally deploy them into a Linux machine and the app will run with out any modifications or recompiling. This is made possible by using a GoDB Virtual Machine. When you develop an app using GoDB, your apps will run on all platforms that have the GoDB VM.

Linux developers can also utilize the GoDB Linux IDE for Linux desktops, which can be downloaded freely.

Linux progammers can install the GoDB IDE in their Linux machines, develop and deploy Linux desktop application. The IDE and Linux VM’s are available free for all development and deployment done on Desktop Linux.

Windows developers who are looking to develop Desktop Linux application in their familiar Windows environment can use GoDB Entreprise version in Windows PC to develop and deploy the applications on both the Windows/Linux Desktop.

There are two versions of GoDB for Linux, the X11 version to run GUI apps in XWindows (XFree86) and a version that directly runs on the framebuffer(GUI apps run from the Linux text console).

Here are some screen shots of GoDB Development.

App development using IDE in Windows OR your favourite Linux distro (Using WINE - for more information read "SETUP.TXT")

Simulator to test and debug the app developed in windows.

Linux Mint 2.1 “Bea”

Linux Mint 2.1 codename “Bea” is out and available for download :)

Many thanks to all the people who contributed to the project and to the users who posted their feedback and suggestions on the forums. Bea is a huge step forward and comes with a lot of changes compared to the last release.

New Software

Two new applications made their way into Linux Mint:

* OpenOffice 2.1-Impress (Calc and Writer also got upgraded to version 2.1)
* Xchat-gnome

Better desktop

This is probably the biggest improvement in Bea: A brand new desktop. Linux Mint 2.1 comes with mintDesktop, which adds a lot of desktop improvements:

* Quick access to the computer and home places
* Quick access to the terminal from the context menu
* Ability to delete files directly without sending them to the Trash
* mintDesktop home folders
* Beagle search
* Tomboy notes
* Network manager

Better Wifi support

Bea comes with mintWifi, which purpose is to allow you to configure your wireless card without an Internet connection. mintWifi comes with the following:

* Ndiswrapper and Ndisgtk
* Cabextractor and unshield
* Tutorials to install and configure your Wifi card
* A collection of Wifi drivers to support about 40 different wireless card models

Better branding

* Bea comes with new artwork: new LiveCD splash, new usplash and GDM screens.
* Help is now “one click away”. As our community is growing it seemed important that users could find help and support in the easiest possible way. To achieve this Xchat-Gnome was modified to automatically connect to the Linux Mint IRC channel, and Firefox now features Linux Mint bookmarks pointing at the website and forums.

Better Web browsing

Web browsing was good in Barbara, but as some of you pointed out, it wasn’t good enough:

* Realplayer 10 was replaced with the Mplayer plugins so you can now enjoy Quicktime, AVI, MPG and a lot of other web content.
* The Flash plugin was upgraded to version 9 Beta 2.
* Support for ipv6 was disabled to make your Internet connection and Web browsing faster
* Firefox 2.0 was tweaked so that it does go back to the previous page when you press the backspace key

And a few surprises…

* For those of you who have nvidia cards there’s a little surprise in Bea called envy
* For those of you who like to mount stuff, PyMou was added to the command line
* For those of you who love using Amarok we added support for MusicBrainz tagging
* For those of you who need to extract RAR archives we included unrar
* For those of you who really like Flash, we included the Flash player
* And for those of you who like playing with the terminal, we put a little surprise in there too

Spliting File in Linux (with no tool)

For example We want to split a file 4Mb in size.Just call it myfile.exe for the name.And we want split it in to 1000KB each which meant that the file will split into four.Here is the command for split the file:
[admin@zone]$ split -b 1000k myfile.exe
Then type this command :
[admin@ zone]$ ls -lh
You can find the files named with "xaa" "xab" "xac" "xad" which the size are 1000KB
And how to combine back the file?We can type this command below to combine the file:
[admin@zone]$ cat xa* > myfileback.exe
The files will combine back and the name return to myfileback.exe again (4MB).

Ubuntu Server Edition

The Server Edition - built on the solid foundation of Debian which is known for its robust server installations — has a strong heritage for reliable performance and predictable evolution.

Integrated and secure platform

As your business grows, so does your network. More applications need to be deployed and more servers are required. Ubuntu Server Edition offers support for several common configurations, and simplifies common Linux server deployment processes. It provides a well-integrated platform enabling you to quickly and easily deploy a new server with any of the standard internet services: mail, web, DNS, file serving or database management.

A key lesson from its Debian heritage is that of security by default. The Ubuntu Server has no open ports after the installation and contains only the essential software needed to build a secure server.

Lower Total cost of ownership with automatic LAMP installation

In around 15 minutes, the time it takes to install Ubuntu Server Edition, you can have a LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP) server up and ready to go. This feature, exclusive to Ubuntu Server Edition, is available at the time of installation.

The LAMP option means you don't have to install and integrate each of the four separate LAMP components, a process which can take hours and requires someone who is skilled in the installation and configuration of the individual applications. Instead, you get increased security, reduced time-to-install, and reduced risk of misconfiguration, all of which results in a lower cost of ownership.

Eliminate the cost of updating individual workstations

Ubuntu Server edition includes thin client support using LTSP (Linux Terminal Server Project). LTSP-5, the latest release, offers a simple installation and easy maintenance. All the data is stored on the server, which will substantially diminish the cost of updating individual workstations and help to ensure their security. Notable benefits of Ubuntu's thin client support are:

  • Simplified management: manage all clients from one system. Install new software, change their configuration, or even upgrade to a new version on the server, and all clients are instantly up to date. There is only one backup to take for all clients.
  • Fully automatic installation and setup: installing a thin client server is as easy as installing a single desktop system, and once it's finished, new clients can be added with no additional administration on the server
  • Lower TCO through shared resources: Common high-powered desktop workstations sit idle most of the day consuming power and costing your organization money. With a high-powered server and low-cost thin clients, you can get great performance and save money. Need higher performance? Just upgrade the server, and all clients instantly benefit.
  • Quick failure recovery: If a client system fails, simply swap in a new one and continue working. No configuration is required, and all of the user's data and settings are intact.
  • Locally attached devices: Users can access printers, cameras, iPods, USB sticks and other devices connected directly to the thin client.

Supported architectures

Ubuntu Server Edition supports x86, AMD64 and UltraSPARC T1 architectures.

  ~#rpm -ivh NVIDIA_nforce-1.0-0248.rh80up_2.4.18_17.athlon.rpm
kemudian tunggu sampai instalasi selesai, kemudian reboot Linux-nya

Saya browsing sebentar ga nemu juga tu driver pctel (maklum dirumah pake dial-up,jadi ga enak sama ortu kalo bulanan telpon membengkak),

  ~# /sbin/insmod pctel
~# /sbin/insmod ptserial
cek hasil instalasi dengan:
  ~#/sbin/lsmod |grep serial
ptserial 42180 0
pctel 1121936 0 [ptserial]
  ~# /sbin/insmod -f pctel
~# /sbin/insmod -f ptserial
Lalu coba cek lagi seperti perintah sebelumnya,kalau sudah ok..
setting dialer untuk dial-up, disini saya pake kppp.

Coba Puppy Linux

Distro ini sangat unik, bukan turunan knoppix ataupun slack. Murni
dibuat dr scratch sbg distro yg kecil tapi lengkap.

Sama
sekali gak perlu harddisk!

Gampang buat pemula, aplikasi cukup lengkap utk kegiatan sehari2. Cocok
digunakan pd pc2 / laptop kuno. Hardware loyo pun bisa ngebut!
Paket2 tambahan banyak tersedia, sbg dotpup atau pupget.

Tersedia distro utk vmware (vmware player tersedia gratis), jadi anda
bisa running linux didalam windows. Dlm vmware, puppy linux bisa sharing
cd, network, sound, usb device, harddisk, dsb.

filesystem puppy linux.

Deteksi hardware terbilang cukup gampang. Remastering cukup disediakan.
Jadi bila anda mau bikin versi live-cd sendiri, scriptnya sudah disediakan.

So, apalagi yg anda tunggu. Just give it a go!

[XMMS]---------------->[OSS]---------[device]

[XMMS]-------------+--->[ESOUND]-------->[device]
[MPlayer]----------+

ALSA

Ini dia jagoan masa depan. ALSA menyediakan fitur lengkap untuk akses sound device, termasuk efek 3D, surround, dll. Jadi asik kalau anda punya sound card canggih. Kalau sound card anda cuma seadanya, ya nggak papa. Fitur extranya ngangur.

ALSA ini begitu powerfull, sehingga teorinya, kita tidak perlu lagi OSS, Esound maupun Arts. Sayangnya, kenyataan dilapangan tidak begitu. Banyak masalah untuk transisi ke ALSA. Mari kita lihat.

[program]-------->[ALSA]------->[device]
[OSS]--X (jangan dipakai)
Ada dua pendekatan. Cara pertama, rekompile kernel anda tanpa OSS.

[XMMS]------>[ALSA]---+--->[DMIX]-->[device (+mixer)]
[MPlayer]--->[ALSA]---+

[program tua]-------->[OSS emulator]----->[ALSA]--->[device]

[IceWM]--------+-->[esound]--+-->[ALSA]--->[DMIX]--->[device]
[FlashPlayer]--+ |
[XMMS]-----------------------+
[MPlayer]--------------------+

Kalau mau coba, cari KDE control center, sound system, terus set "Auto-suspend if idle after ...".

[KDE]------+-->[ARTS]-+->[Esound]-+->[ALSA]-->[DMIX]-->[device]
[Kafeine]--+ | |
[FlashPlayer]---------+ |
[XMMS]----------------------------+
[MPlayer]-------------------------+
[Xine]----------------------------+
[Games]------->[SDL Mixer]--------+
Nah lho ... mabok nggak tuh !
Ini dia shot konser bareng KDE + MPlayer + Xine + Kaffeine + XMMS + Konqueror (Flash) + Firefox (Flash) + Games di Vector Linux SOHO 5.0.

Jadi, begitulah.
